Swords of the Coast
From the earliest days to the present age, the history of the Toril is exciting and brutal. Toril is an old land, full of long-lost empires and wonders. One after another, the great ancient races rose and fell, finally giving rise to the Time Age of Men. Even within this epoch, great empires and shining kingdoms have risen and fallen, passing into the dust of centuries past, leaving only their cryptic ruins and fell lore behind.
Age Before Thought -3,5000 to -339 DR. This is the time of the creator races, when many gods came to the world and made their early plant form life. Later creating smaller less intelligent life forms that fed off the plants and each other.
Birth of Magic Event -2,000 DR. The gods enriched Toril with magical properties. Basic plant life, large lakes, old mountains, forest, and smaller life forms had basic magical auras enchanted to them.
First to Art Event -1,500 DR. At this time the gods created a new form of life. These were the first to plan, create art, worry about their existence, had complex emotions, and were attracted to magic. These creatures were known as the ‘Dalereks’
Magic Evolved Event -500 DR. ‘Dalereks’ have found ways to control basic forms of magic. The first spells and magical artifacts were created at this time. The soon after created the Hearts of Auroras. Magical spell forges that harnessed the oldest of magical properties in the world. They used these forges to create some of the most powerful artifacts ever.
Age of Wind and Fire -339 to 100DR. It was at this time that the gods wanted to create a being not needing the world’s magic but rather were born with magical properties of their own. The Dragons first took flight at this time and laid waste to all other forms of life.
Dalereckoning Event (DR): Dalereckoning is the event when the Dragons successfully defeated the ‘Dalereks’ and took control of their most powerful magical items. The Dragons quickly learned that old powerful magics were not to be tampered with. These early experiments set forth a climactic event which caused the end of the ‘Dalereks’ empire. The spells of the ‘Dalereks’ arsenal altered the very geography of the land when it came in contact with the Dragons greed and ambition. These failures caused the transformation of hills into mountains, plains into desserts, lakes into oceans, cities into canyons, and farmlands into ash.
Age of Rebellion 100 to 500 DR. The gods grew tired of the Dragons laying waste to their creation. In an effort to bring balance to life they created many ancient creatures to fend off the Dragons. Of the many new races created only one fought along side the Dragons. The Dragonborn. The Dragonborn turned their backs to the gods and protected the Dragons from the new creations of the gods. For hundreds of years the Dragonborn served the Dragons but also brought a rebirth in civilization and wonder. Without notice the Dragonborn turned on the Dragons and pushed them back from their main cities. Most of the Dragonborn were destroyed in their rebellion but they had finally brought peace to the region.
Era of Birth 500 to 2,00 DR. The gods not pleased with the Dragons, nor the Dragonborn, created more Dragonborn like creatures. They first made the Elves who took to the woods and the first control magic left behind from the ‘Dalereks’, then the Dwarves who traveled for settlements but could not make homes, Gnomes who first masted the stones of the mountains and taught the Dwarves to mine, Halflings whos manded the farm and masted the art of cooking, Orcs who failed their creatures and fought the Dwarves, and then the Humans who learned from all their fellow creatures and tried to claim the richer lands.
Opening of the woods Event 1,250 DR. The elves first opened their woodland cities to the Humans then Halflings and lastly the Gnomes. This was the time of great prosperity. During these times the Dwarves and Gnomes controlled the mountains as the Orcs hunted for allies and homelands. Very few Dragonborns remained but they were able to make small settlements and kept to themselves. Around this time the first maps of the contents and world were made.
Kings of Ages 2,000 to 3,000 DR. The threat of the Drow are discovered. An Orc virus lead to several mutations of their newborns which lead to the creation of the Goblins. The Dragons have made new allies and raised armies. At this time Humans, Elves, and Dwarves realised the need for large Strongholds, Fortress, and Kingdoms. At this age we find the first Kings who promised to protect their citizens and fight back these new threats.
The Day of Troubles Event 2,874 DR. Also known as the Arrival or the Departure, The War Of The Creations has started. At this period almost every creation of the gods were at arms with each other. The Dragons has conquered the highest of Elven fortress and once again gained control of the strongest magical artifacts of the time. The gods agreed to one last time directly intervene in the world.
The Avatar Crisis Event 2,943 DR. This was a cataclysmic event in the timeline of Faerûn. The Crisis was a period during which the deities of Faerûn were forced to walk the earth in their mortal avatar forms. Several major deities died during the The Avatar Crisis and a handful of mortals rose to divinity. Three Elves, two Humans, and one Dwarf rose to divinity to replace the six fallen gods. The efforts of these new gods brought an end to The War Of The Creations. Since this day no other gods have entered the world.
The Age of Men (Unofficial) 3,000 DR to current. There are little to no Kings left. Trade is more open and the major races are at peace. Humans are the largest race in terms of both numbers and power.
The Spellplague Event 3,185 DR. Was a disaster that struck the entire planet. A secret group Drow and Tiefling offensive struck some of the locations of the Hearts of Auroras all in the same night. As they destroyed these spell forges a large shock wave swept the land creating fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods. These reactions has since hid the Hearts of Auroras under rubble, ash, and water and have not been found since. Due to the lose of these spell forges large magical properties ceased to work and were not able to be created. Since then expeditions have begun to find the lost or destroyed Hearts of Auroras.
The Goblin War 3,481 DR. Yet another mutation has affected the Goblins. It was discovered that the memories of the Goblins could be passed on after death when the brains are eaten by other goblins. This made them more aggressive and less fearful. It also gave rise to Bugbears and Hobgoblins. This new found power along with more powerful units motivated them to lead an offensive on the main inland cities. The war started when an elder-dragon massed an army of orcs and goblins and attacked. Interestingly, although the war is referred to as the Goblin Wars, goblins only made up a fraction of the army, most of the fighting being done by the Orcs. Also, although the Elves and Humans took up the front end of the war, it was the Dwarven renifroncemets and flanking that ended the war. A war that started by goblins attacking humans and elves ending with dwarves counter attacking orcs.
